Intel announces 545s series SSD with world's 1st 64 layer 3D TLC NAND

Intel has announced the availability of world’s first commercially available 64-layer TLC 3D NAND SSD- something that a number of SSD makers have been striving for recently. This new technology has made its way to market with the Intel SSD 545s, which is geared towards the mainstream audience as a reliable option. The 545s is the successor to last year's Intel SSD 540s, which was in many ways a filler product to cover up inconvenient gaps in Intel's SSD technology roadmap. In short, the technology allows for more storage space to be squeezed into fewer chips.

The Intel SSD 545s, initially offered in a 512GB capacity, boasts maximum sequential read and write speeds of up to 550MB/sec and 500MB/sec, respectively, with 4KB random read speeds of up to 75,000 IOPS and 4K random write speeds of up to 90,000 IOPS. This 2.5-inch notebook/desktop disk drive replacement product has a 1.6 million hours MTBF rating, a five-year limited warranty, and AES 256-bit encryption.

At this very moment the 545s is only available in a 512GB volume version, but it is expected that Intel will release models ranging fron 128GB up-towards 2 TB as 64-layer NAND definitely increases storage capacity. The 512GB model will cost 179 USD, similar to the Samsung 850EVO. What Intel's new SSD 545s immediately gains over a drive like that is an impressive 5-year warranty.
