    Will Solid State Drives Replace Conventional Hard Disks Soon?

    Conventional hard disk we all use now is the result of 40 years of research and solid state disk advantagesdevelopment. 3 Terabyte space is a single disk is not achieved in a single days. Hard disks of early times were capable of storing megabytes of data only. And the size measured in cubic feet where it’s in inches unit now. Early hard disks used as much as space of a refrigerator. But now I am writing this article in a laptop on a moving car. And the size is definitely 2 or 3 inches.

    Moreover, with advancement in technology hdd prices decreases rapidly. You must spend $15,000 for every megabyte of space in early 1970s. But now my 329 GB hdd featured netbook costs only $300. It’s greater than 150 million to 1 improvement. And this is one of the major reasons of hard disk’s success over the years.

    As of 2010, a typical 7200 rpm desktop hard drive has a sustained “disk-to-buffer” data transfer rate up to 1030 Mbits/sec. Average access time decreasing from greater than 0.1 second to a few thousandths of a second, a greater than 40 to 1 improvement.

    Compared with hard disk technology solid state drives are relatively newer. The technology of Solid State Drives has been in the works for about a decade. And from 2010 the SSD drives are being used in commercial purposes. Apple Inc. is one of the users of SSD, e.g. in MacBook Air. But before the success in commercial platforms it must overcome some major drawbacks. But is SSD match the speed, cost, and capacity of the HDD?

    Solid State Drives use microchips which retain data in non-volatile memory chips. It contains no moving parts. Compared to traditional HDDs, SSDs are typically less susceptible to physical shock, quieter, and have lower access time and latency. As of 2010, most SSDs use NAND-based flash memory, which retains memory even without power. SSDs using volatile random-access memory (RAM) also exist for situations that require even faster access, but do not necessarily need data persistence after power loss, or use external power or batteries to maintain the data after power is removed.

    One important feature in SSDs is it use the same interface as hard disk drives. So SSDs are easily capable of replacing HDD in most applications.

    Now forget about what Apple does in Mac Air. We are now discussing about solid state drive featuresWindows 7, because it’s might be the future of personal computing for the next 5 years. Windows takes 24.1 seconds to boot using conventional Hard Disk Drive. But in Solid State Drive it takes only 9.1 seconds to boot. That’s a major achievement of SSDs. The improvement is about 62%.

    So the SSD hardware is set to make a larger impact on Windows 7. Still Costs, and capacity are relevant factors. These have to be taken into account before significant number of consumers make that move. Most off all SSD price must be lower a lot before appearing in our home more randomly.
